BLACK HISTORY MONTH

Updated: Mar 21

Global activism is proud to stand in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement. With Black and Brown, readers, friends, family, and all who have experienced racism and other injustice forms.

As we enter the month of February, Global Activism wants our readers to celebrate black history month by honoring black Canadians stories.

While we discuss black Canadians' success and their outstanding contribution to society, I also want to light the historical and current oppression of Canadians of African descent. Practices of anti-blackness are currently embedded into our intuitions and systems, and while we see Canada as a diverse nation, we are not free from sexism, racism, etc. The featured story in Week 1 will perfectly capture the link between slavery and present day racism.

Black and brown stories are often unrepresented and unexplored. Global Activism Foundation will host a virtual book reading novels centered on underrepresented groups in literature. Our goal is to promote representation, build cross-cultural empathy, and have their voice heard in underrepresented groups.

WEEK 1: Robyn Maynard novel, Policing Black Lives ( Adult Novel) : Discusses." the violent realities of anti-blackness from the slave ships to prisons, classrooms and beyond. Robyn Maynard provides readers with the first comprehensive account of over four hundred years of state-sanctioned surveillance, criminalization and punishment of Black lives in Canada".

WEEK 2: A Change of Heart, Written by Alice Walsh (Children Book) : "In 1941, a young African American, Lanier Phillips, tried to escape the racism and segregation of his home by joining the navy. But tragedy struck one February night off the coast of Newfoundland, and Lanier was the lone Black survivor of a terrible shipwreck. This book vividly depicts the true story of a man’s life-changing experience in Newfoundland and the healing power of kindness and humanity".

WEEK 3: The Field Guide to the North American Teenager, by: Ben Philippe ( Adult Teen): "When Norris, a Black French Canadian, starts his junior year at an Austin, Texas, high school, he views his fellow students as clichés from "a bad 90s teen movie".

WEEK FOUR: Viola Desmond Won't be Budged! By: Jody Warner ( Children book): "Jody tells the story of Viola Desmond a Canadian civil rights activist and businesswoman, who stood up to racial segregation".

We ask readers to post themselves reading these books and giving us a review of these books. I hope you join us and take part in our celebration of Black history month.
